## What the research can support

Opening a letter, buying a consumer product, and creating a B2B opportunity are different outcomes. Keep the audience, comparison, and measured result beside each claim.

### B2B opening and response, 2000

De Wulf, Hoekstra, and Commandeur reported a field experiment with 60 Belgian managers in [The opening and reading behavior of business-to-business direct mail](https://research.rug.nl/en/publications/the-opening-and-reading-behavior-of-business-to-business-direct-m/). The abstract reports that envelope characteristics affected opening behavior, while targeting mattered for reading and response.

This is B2B research, so it would be wrong to say none exists. It concerns a small, older sample and communication behavior. It does not supply a transferable estimate of incremental pipeline for a current B2B campaign. We reviewed the abstract, not the paywalled full paper.

### A B2B mail budget experiment, 2011

Wiesel, Pauwels, and Arts studied B2B office-furniture supplier Inofec in [Marketing's Profit Impact](https://pure.rug.nl/ws/files/145908683/Marketing_s_profit_impact_Quantifying_online_and_offline_funnel_progression.pdf). From June to August 2009, four regional groups in the Netherlands received different flyer and paid-search budgets. Cutting flyer spending in half improved profit after marketing costs because the savings exceeded the lost gross profit. Increasing paid-search spending also improved results.

A channel can generate sales yet receive too much budget. This was one supplier's regional budget test, with pre/post profit changes adjusted for national changes. The paper does not describe random assignment of accounts, and the result does not tell you how personalized B2B letters will perform today.

### A controlled consumer mail experiment, 2023

Valenti and colleagues studied mail and email at retailers in [Direct mail to prospects and email to current customers?](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11747-023-00962-2). Their beauty-retailer experiment included 122,394 customers in Italy, split across no marketing, email, mail, and both channels. It ran from July to November 2017.

The experiment found a positive sales effect from mail among prospects. Results differed by customer segment and from some of the historical-data estimates. This supports testing the audience and channel together. It does not establish a B2B response rate or prove that adding mail improves every sequence.

### Household mail attention, Q4 2024

[JICMAIL's Q4 2024 release](https://www.jicmail.org.uk/insights/quarterly-releases/q4-2024-results-mail-read-rates-hit-an-all-time-high-as-the-channel-continues-to-assert-its-super-touchpoint-strengths/) records reading, looking at, or glancing at 77% of the 9,875 mail items in that quarter's sample. It covers all mail types in a UK household panel.

That is evidence of attention in the home. It is not a randomized comparison of mail against no mail, a measure of business buyers, or a revenue result. Treat the figure as context, not a target response rate for your account list.

## What remains unknown

These sources do not establish the incremental revenue your B2B program will create. They also do not show that handwritten pieces always beat printed ones, that a letter should always precede email, or that successful teams keep their results private. Those are hypotheses to test, not conclusions to borrow.

An older review by Duncan Simester, [Field Experiments in Marketing](https://conference.nber.org/confer/2015/FEs15/Simester.pdf), identified 61 papers in five marketing journals from 1995 through 2014. Its scope ends there, and the author explicitly notes possible omissions. It cannot establish that B2B mail research is absent today.

## How to find out whether your mail works

1. Choose one decision-relevant outcome and measurement window before launch. A meeting, qualified opportunity, and closed deal answer different questions.
2. Randomize whole accounts into mailed and held-out groups. If you are testing mail added to an outbound sequence, keep the other touches comparable between groups.
3. Use the [holdout size calculator](https://trysincerely.com/tools/holdout-size) before spending. A 100-piece pilot can test operations and collect responses; it will usually be too small to distinguish modest pipeline lift from noise.
4. Keep undelivered pieces in the assigned treatment group, wait for the window to close, and report both groups' counts and the lift interval. An uncertain result is not proof that mail had no effect.

If a campaign mixes mail and gifts, define that bundle as the treatment or test the formats separately. Otherwise, the readout cannot say which format caused the result.

The [holdout testing guide](https://trysincerely.com/holdout-testing) explains the design. For a small list, read [what a small audience can tell you](https://trysincerely.com/guides/direct-mail-small-audiences). The [measurement guide](https://trysincerely.com/measurement) separates direct response, CRM matchback, and incremental lift.

## How we reviewed the evidence

This is a focused source review, not a systematic review of every study. On September 6, 2026, we searched the web for randomized B2B direct mail experiments and business-to-business direct mail field experiments, and followed the sources behind the claims on this page. We read publisher or university abstracts and open full text where available.

We included B2B behavioral and budget studies, a controlled retail experiment, and a household panel to distinguish what each design can answer. Vendor testimonials without a comparison group were not used to estimate causal lift. We did not search every academic database or obtain every paywalled paper, so this review cannot establish that no relevant study exists.
