# What is a buying committee?

> A buying committee is the group of people at an account who share a purchase decision. Learn who sits on one and why outreach to a single contact falls short.

Source: https://trysincerely.com/glossary/buying-committee

A buying committee is the group of people at one company who decide a purchase together. It usually includes the person who feels the pain, the person who signs, and people who can veto: finance, IT, security, legal. In mid-market and enterprise deals that is often five or more people, and no single one of them can say yes alone.

## Why it matters

Most outbound targets one contact. If that person ignores you, leaves, or lacks authority, the deal stalls before it starts. Selling to the committee means reaching several roles at the same account with messages that match each role's concerns. The economic buyer cares about cost and risk. The daily user cares about workflow. The security reviewer cares about compliance.

This is the core idea behind [ABM](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/abm): treat the account, not the contact, as the unit of pursuit. It also changes how you measure. A meeting booked with one committee member is progress on the account, so account-level metrics like [cost per opportunity](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/cost-per-opportunity) beat per-contact reply rates. The same logic applies to testing: hold out whole accounts, not individual people, or you contaminate your control group. See [holdout](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/holdout) for why.

Direct mail fits committee selling well. A physical piece on a VP's desk gets seen by the assistant who opens it and sometimes passed around, and it does not compete in an inbox with forty other sequences.

## Example

You sell security software to a 400-person company. The committee is the CISO (signs), a security engineer (evaluates), the CFO (approves budget), and IT (deploys). One email sequence to the engineer touches a quarter of the decision. A campaign that reaches all four, each with a relevant message, works the whole account.

Sell to one person and you are pitching a quarter of the decision.
