# What is direct response?

> Direct response is marketing built to trigger a measurable action now, like a scan, reply, or booked meeting, so every dollar can be traced to a result.

“Scan this code.” “Book a meeting.” “Reply for the sample.” Each is a direct-response ask because the recipient knows what to do next and the sender can observe the action. Brand marketing has a different job. It builds familiarity that may pay off later.

## Why it matters

A specific ask gives the campaign a feedback loop. You can count how many people acted and what those responses cost. That makes it easier to change a weak offer or put more money behind one that is working. It does not make attribution automatic.

A QR scan is direct evidence that someone acted on the piece. Plenty of B2B buyers take a less tidy path. They see a postcard, search for the company a week later, and never touch the printed link. Counting only tracked responses misses them. A [holdout](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/holdout) helps estimate [incrementality](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/incrementality), while [matchback](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/matchback) finds buyers who responded through another route. Neither turns a messy buying journey into perfect knowledge.

## Example

You mail 500 target accounts a letter with one ask: book a 20-minute teardown call at a short URL. Thirty accounts use the URL, giving you a 6% tracked response. A few more mailed accounts book through the website without it. Matchback can find those accounts. The holdout is what helps answer the harder question: how much of that activity would have happened anyway?

Sincerely runs direct mail as direct response by default: every campaign locks a primary outcome at launch, a campaign built to measure lift also locks a holdout, and the readout labels QR scans and CRM matchback as evidence or inference honestly.

Direct response gives the recipient a clear next step. Good measurement still takes more than counting clicks.

Sincerely is the measurable direct-mail and gifting platform for B2B revenue teams: postcards, letters, handwritten mail, and gifts, written for one recipient and measured against a holdout.
