# What is first-class mail vs marketing mail?

> The difference between USPS First-Class Mail and Marketing Mail, and why B2B senders usually pay for First-Class.

First-Class Mail and USPS Marketing Mail are the two postage classes most business mail travels under. First-Class costs more, delivers in 1 to 5 days, and includes forwarding and return service. Marketing Mail costs less, typically takes 3 to 10 days, requires a minimum of 200 pieces or 50 pounds per mailing, and does not forward or return by default.

## Why it matters

The class you pick changes three things:

- **Speed.** USPS publishes [1 to 5 days for First-Class](https://www.usps.com/ship/mail-shipping-services.htm) and [3 to 10 days for Marketing Mail](https://about.usps.com/publications/pub632/pub632_006.htm). Marketing Mail is the deferred class, so it is the one that slips furthest in busy seasons. If your piece references a meeting, an event, or a fresh trigger, Marketing Mail can land after the moment has passed.
- **Feedback.** First-Class pieces come back when the address is bad, so you learn about stale data. Marketing Mail is usually discarded silently, so your list never gets cleaner. See [return to sender](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/return-to-sender).
- **Cost.** Marketing Mail postage is meaningfully cheaper per piece, which is why high-volume consumer catalogs use it. The savings only matter at volumes where sorting discounts apply.

For B2B outbound, First-Class almost always wins. You send hundreds of pieces to named people, not millions to households, so the postage difference is small in absolute dollars and timing is the whole point. Sincerely's [per-piece prices](https://trysincerely.com/pricing) include print and postage, so class is never a line item you manage.

## Example

You mail 150 postcards timed to land the week before a conference. First-Class lands them in 3 to 5 days, on schedule. The same job as Marketing Mail could arrive after the conference ends, and any bad addresses vanish without a trace instead of failing loudly into your [suppression list](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/suppression-list).

Marketing Mail buys reach per dollar. First-Class buys timing and truth, and B2B runs on both.
