# What is an IMb (Intelligent Mail barcode)?

Look at the address side of a piece of US business mail and you will usually find a row of 65 tall and short bars. That is the Intelligent Mail barcode, usually shortened to IMb. Inside it are the ZIP+4 routing details and a serial number that identifies that particular piece. USPS sorting equipment reads the bars as the mail moves, leaving the scan trail that mailers use for tracking. The barcode also qualifies eligible mail for automation prices.

This was not always one mark. USPS used to rely on POSTNET for routing and a separate barcode for tracking. POSTNET stopped qualifying for automation prices on [January 27, 2013](https://about.usps.com/postal-bulletin/2012/pb22353/html/updt_002.htm), leaving IMb to carry both jobs.

## Why it matters

Without IMb scans, the time between printer and mailbox is mostly guesswork. Each recorded scan adds a place and time to the journey: induction into the mail stream, another sorting facility, then the destination post office. In practice, that helps with three jobs:

- Delivery estimates. You can time follow-up calls or emails to land a day or two after the piece arrives, instead of guessing.
- Proof of induction. If a campaign underperforms, scan data tells you whether the mail actually went out and when.
- Cleaner [attribution windows](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/attribution-window). Knowing the real delivery date, not the print date, anchors your measurement to when the recipient could actually respond.

There is an important gap in that trail. IMb does not record a handoff to the recipient. The last scan supports an estimated delivery date, usually based on arrival at the destination post office, but it does not prove that someone held or read the piece. Nor can it rescue a bad address. ## Example

You mail a 6x9 postcard from a facility in Ohio on Monday. IMb scans show it clearing Indianapolis Tuesday and reaching the destination sorting center in Denver Thursday. Friday is your likely in-hand date, so your rep calls the account Monday morning.

That small barcode is where nearly all useful delivery timing for modern US mail begins.
