# What determines direct mail postage rates?

Direct mail postage rates are the prices USPS charges to accept and deliver a mailing. The amount depends on the service and the work required to process each piece. There is no single direct mail rate.

The first choice is mail class. First-Class Mail and USPS Marketing Mail have different service standards, eligibility rules, and prices. The right comparison starts with what the piece is and when it needs to arrive, not with one headline number.

## Why it matters

Shape and weight affect which price category applies. A postcard, letter, flat, and parcel move through different equipment and follow different rules. Dimensions, thickness, flexibility, and aspect ratio can matter as much as the paper on a scale.

Preparation changes the rate too. [Presort](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/presort) groups pieces by destination so USPS has less sorting to do. Mailings that qualify for finer presort levels can receive deeper discounts.

Entry point is another factor. A mailer may enter prepared mail closer to its destination, reducing the transportation and handling left for USPS. That choice only makes sense when the mailing volume and logistics support it.

Rates and detailed standards change. Use the official [USPS Postal Explorer](https://pe.usps.com/) for the current price list, then check that the proposed format and preparation meet the category's rules. A quote from a print vendor may bundle postage with printing and mailing services, so ask what the number includes.

Sincerely folds print and postage into each format's credit weight. Subscription credits or prepaid top-up credits fund ordinary mail, so postage is not a separate balance you have to reconcile.

## Example

Two campaigns each mail 5,000 pieces. One uses automation-compatible letters with dense regional destinations. The other uses heavier, unusually shaped pieces scattered nationwide. Their counts match, but their postage will not.

Postage follows the piece, the service, and the work USPS still has to do.
