# What is presort mail?

> Presorting groups mail by destination to USPS standards before entry, reducing postal sorting work and qualifying eligible mailings for lower postage rates.

Source: https://trysincerely.com/glossary/presort

Presorting is the process of grouping mail by destination before it enters the USPS network. The mailing is organized to USPS standards by ZIP Code and finer destination groups, then prepared in the required trays, sacks, or containers. Because the mailer has already done part of the sorting work, eligible mail can qualify for lower postage rates.

Most businesses do not presort mail in their own office. A print vendor, mail service provider, or presort bureau usually runs the address file, sorts the records, prepares the containers, and submits the required mailing documentation.

## Why it matters

Presort is one of the main drivers of postage cost. How finely a mailing can be sorted depends on its destinations, volume, mail class, shape, and preparation. A dense mailing may place more pieces into finer groups than a list scattered across the country.

Presort also comes with address-quality rules. USPS [Move Update standards](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/602.htm) apply to discounted First-Class Mail and USPS Marketing Mail, and [NCOA](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/ncoa) processing is a common way to update addresses before mailing. [CASS](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/cass) work standardizes address details and helps assign the routing information used in sorting.

Presort does not mean every piece travels together after entry. USPS equipment and transportation still route each piece toward its destination. Nor does presort guarantee delivery. An address can meet formatting rules and still belong to someone who moved.

Sincerely sends address-approved pieces through print vendors that handle the postal preparation for the chosen format and class.

## Example

A printer has 12,000 letters bound for addresses across several states. Its mailing software groups them by destination, produces the container labels and paperwork, and sends the prepared mail to USPS. The sender pays the applicable presorted rate instead of handing over 12,000 unsorted letters.

Presort trades careful preparation before entry for less work inside the postal network.
