# What is variable data printing?

> Variable data printing is a digital printing method that changes text, offers, images, or other elements for each piece without stopping the press.

Imagine 2,000 postcards moving through one press run. One says “Morgan,” the next says “Priya,” and each can carry a different image, offer, URL, or account detail. Variable data printing is the method that makes those changes while the press keeps moving. A data file tells it which version belongs on each piece.

Printers usually shorten the name to VDP. An offset press works from a fixed plate and repeats the same image. A digital press can change that image for the next recipient without stopping to make another plate.

## Why it matters

VDP makes personalization practical at postcard and letter scale. Thousands of distinct pieces can stay in one production run instead of becoming thousands of tiny print jobs.

The useful choices go well beyond a first name. You can show the nearest location, choose an image for the recipient's industry, print a unique [PURL](https://trysincerely.com/glossary/purl), or change the offer by account. The list no longer has to receive one identical message.

The press is usually the easy part. Bad data is what gets teams into trouble. A misspelled name or blank company field becomes ink on paper unless the workflow catches it first. Every variable needs a fallback, and the design needs enough room for long names and other awkward values.

Sincerely builds each piece from approved writing and recipient data, then keeps that rendered version attached to the send record.

## Example

A software company mails 2,000 postcards. Each card names the account, shows a customer story from the same industry, and prints a unique response URL. The cards still move through the printer as one run.

The cards are different, but they are still produced together. That is the practical value of VDP.
