# QR codes

> Postcards and letters can carry a per-piece QR code and printed response link, tied to the exact piece and recipient, with honest scan semantics.

## One code per piece, not one per campaign.

Batch mail prints one QR code for everyone, so a scan tells you nothing about who responded. For postcards and letters, Sincerely mints a code per piece, tied to the intended recipient, the campaign step, and the exact design version that went to print.

### One piece · postcard · step 2

| Field | Record |
| ----------------- | --------------------------- |
| QR encodes | this piece's own link |
| printed beside it | acme.sincerely.link/k3f9q2p |
| scan | recorded against the piece |
| typed visit | recorded, labeled typed |

The piece page keeps a mono status line, for example `1 scan · design v2 · destination current`.

## Formats, truthfully.

- **Postcards and letters.** Always carry a QR code and a printed response link, in the US and Canada: the full link on the app domain, or a short link once your workspace prints its own domain. The code is a design block, so you can keep the standard one that encodes the piece's response link, move it, or replace it with a custom code you control.
- **Handwritten pieces.** Use the same movable per-piece QR block on a 4×6 postcard or letter, or omit the response QR and printed link. Handwritten pieces omit them by default, and printing them is a layout choice rather than a destination.
- **Gift notes.** Carry no QR code or response link. One-off and campaign gift orders are tracked in the Send ledger rather than through a scan.
- **Design rules enforced.** The studio holds the code above minimum print size and measures the real URL your workspace will print, so what fits on screen fits on paper.

## What a scan proves, and what it doesn't.

A visit through the QR link proves the link was used. It does not prove a camera read the paper, and it does not verify the person holding the phone. Sincerely labels scans and typed visits separately and never inflates one into the other.

- **Scan rate.** Unique scanned pieces over the delivered cohort. Never raw visit counts wearing that label, and repeat visits never pad the number.
- **Piece-level record.** Each visit records the source, the action taken, the design version served, and the piece it traces to. It lands in [measurement](/measurement) as evidence.
- **Destination can change.** The printed code stays fixed, and the destination belongs to the campaign or send rather than the design. While the campaign is live or paused, you can point future visits somewhere new, to a [hosted page or your own site](/landing-pages). A completed campaign's routing is locked.
