# Direct mail vs email for outbound

## Your sequences aren't broken. The inbox is.

AI made outbound email free to write, and a channel where sending is free is a channel where everyone sends more. Your buyer's inbox absorbs the increase without noticing, and if your reply rates have slid while your send volume climbed, you have watched it happen from the other side. That is not a tooling problem. It is the economics of a free channel, and better subject lines do not change the economics.

Move the touches that need more attention to paper, or to a gift with a note, but keep the email sequence. The two channels work best together. The question is which moments justify print and postage, and how you will know whether the mail changed anything.

Where this page leans on industry figures they are consumer figures, and we label them as such; [we went looking for the real B2B evidence](https://trysincerely.com/does-direct-mail-work-in-b2b) and published what we found.

## The economics

Free to send is expensive to trust.

A channel earns attention in proportion to what it costs to use. Email costs nothing per send, so it fills until attention runs out, and every improvement in sending tools fills it faster. Mail costs real money per piece, which keeps the mailbox scarce, and scarcity is the mechanism: the piece lands where almost nothing else arrived that day. Paying for postage is not an unfortunate property of the channel. It is the reason the channel can still work.

| Measure | The inbox | The mailbox |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Cost per touch | Effectively zero, which is the problem | A paid physical touch, including print and postage |
| What arrives | One of a hundred that morning, mostly deleted unread | A physical piece that sits on the desk until someone deals with it |
| Who else is in the channel | Every vendor with a sequencer, at growing volume | Almost nobody, and fewer each year |
| Who writes it | The sequencer's template, plus whatever the rep changes by hand | A piece researched and written for the person, with a page rendered for them behind the QR code |
| How it is measured | Opens and replies, neither of them causal | Lift against an account-level holdout, or descriptives honestly labeled |

The package and format terms active for the current deployment are published on the [pricing page](https://trysincerely.com/pricing). LocaliQ's 2026 cross-industry benchmark puts the average search ad click at $5.42.

## What paper cannot do

A comparison that only lists the other channel's weaknesses is an advertisement. Here is the other side of the ledger.

- **It is slow.** A piece takes days to land, not seconds. Mail suits moments you can see coming (a renewal window, a funding round, a deal gone quiet), not the follow-up your rep owes someone this afternoon.
- **It costs real money per mistake.** A bad email is deleted and forgotten. A letter that gets the facts wrong sits on a desk with your logo on it. Every researched fact here carries its source. Weak or uncited facts always wait for a person.
- **It does not iterate like email.** No subject-line tests across ten thousand sends by lunchtime. The feedback loop is weeks, so the audience selection and the writing have to be right before postage, not after.
- **It does not replace your sequences.** The strongest pattern we see is paper running under the sequences you already send, so the letter is on the desk when the rep's email and call arrive. That is what [Outbound Air Cover](https://trysincerely.com/campaigns) is for.

## How you would know

Move a hundred touches. Hold some accounts back.

The argument above is a mechanism, not a measurement, and a mechanism is not a reason to reallocate budget. The measurement is a holdout: mail a slice of your target accounts, hold a randomized slice back, and compare opportunity rates when the sales cycle has run. Every campaign here that can support one is measured that way by default.

If the estimate comes back flat, read the interval. A narrow one around zero says mail added little for your accounts, which is worth knowing and which no benchmark could have told you. A wide one says the test could not tell yet. The [holdout testing guide](https://trysincerely.com/holdout-testing) covers the design, and [measurement](https://trysincerely.com/measurement) shows the report it produces.

The Pilot is priced as an experiment. It is a one-time package with no renewal and no top-up purchases. If it created nothing, you learned before scaling. Current terms are on the [pricing page](https://trysincerely.com/pricing).
